Consultations & Coaching
If you are looking for an experienced, professional reader for your novel, story collection, or book of essays, I offer either an overall read with editorial letter or a full developmental manuscript critique with editorial letter and margin notes for your complete (or nearly complete) book. The week or so after I send your letter, we have an hour-long Zoom conversation to answer your questions and develop a revision plan. I also read selections of manuscripts in progress on a single session or monthly basis.
When you work with me, we explore the human and thematic aspects of writing as well as the book’s opportunities for further development of the characters (individually and in their relationships); point of view, structure, plot and narrative tension; the handling of time and place; pacing, language, dialogue; and any questions particular to your work. Through my response and our follow-up conversations, you’ll get a sense of what’s already strong along with ideas and questions for revision.
If this sounds like what you’re looking for, please send me five pages of your current project along with a few paragraphs letting me know who you are, with a description of the book and an idea of what kind of help you’re looking for. There’s no reading fee for this—it’s important for you to find the right editor. If it seems like we’re a good fit, I will send you my initial thoughts, and if they resonate with you, we can schedule the manuscript reading, return of comments, and our follow-up meeting. Since I only work on one manuscript at a time, please get in touch with me when you’re close to ready but not absolutely done. That way we can get you scheduled as you finish the current draft.
Classes
I teach classes through the Stanford Continuing Studies Creative Writing Program, including the Online Certificate Program in Novel Writing. My winter class is currently full, and there’s a waitlist, but in the summer, I will be teaching a course on dialogue in fiction and memoir.
Here’s the course description for my current class:
Hilary Mantel said, “A novel should be a book of questions, not a book of answers.” As we write and revise our novels, we seek to deepen the narrative questions that draw readers in, connecting our urgent themes to our books’ dramatic arcs. This course is suitable for anyone who has a novel or novella in progress, whether traditional or innovative in structure, and has taken at least one creative writing workshop. Whether you are stuck on Chapter 3 or unsure how to revise a rough draft, this course will help clear away stumbling blocks. We'll discuss how to structure plot, reveal character complexity, craft compelling beginnings and endings, and explore POV, voice, and world-building. We will read and discuss selections from novels by Elena Ferrante, Zadie Smith, Dara Horn, Joy Williams, Kazuo Ishiguro, and others. You will post up to four writing exercises or selections from your novel (up to 1,250 words each) for brief, specific, supportive feedback from your peer group and instructor. In our live (optional but highly recommended) Zoom sessions, we’ll combine reading and craft discussions and writing exercises with time for your own craft and process questions. By the end of the course, you will possess a deeper understanding of your characters, your story, and the path forward for your novel.
